Historic Loleta is located 15 miles south of Eureka between the Eel River and the Pacific Ocean. From Loleta you can view the Pacific Ocean and the lower Eel River Valley. Loleta includes a large part of the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge with over 200 bird species and a great place for a walk. Loleta originally known as Swauger’s Station is was renamed in 1897 and is known for its dairy farms and cheeses. The Wiyot Indians resided in the Loleta area until the 1860 massacre.
