Historic Arcata played a part in the Gold Rush as a supply center for the miners and pack trains, who were mining gold up the Klamath, Trinity, and Salmon Rivers. Arcata was named after an Indian name, ar-ka-ta meaning something like "a place to land" in 1860. Originally, Arcata was named Union.
Arcata still has numerous historic homes and buildings.
